HubSpot CRM Review: What You Actually Get on the Free Tier
HubSpot built its reputation on a free CRM tier that’s actually usable, not just a crippled trial in disguise. We set up a small sales pipeline — around 200 contacts, a handful of deal stages, and a couple of team members — to see how far the free plan really goes before you’re pushed toward a paid tier.
Setup and first impressions
Getting a working pipeline running took under an hour, including importing an existing contact list from a CSV. The interface is clean and doesn’t require a manual to find your way around, which is more than can be said for most CRMs at any price point.
Contact records automatically pull in some enrichment data (company name, social profiles) without any configuration, which is a nice touch for a free product.
What’s genuinely free
- Unlimited users and up to a fairly high contact limit on the free tier
- Deal pipeline with customizable stages
- Email tracking and basic templates
- Simple reporting dashboards
For a small team running a straightforward sales process, this covers the essentials without needing a credit card.
Where the upsells start
The friction shows up the moment you want automation — sequences, workflow triggers, and anything beyond basic email tracking sit behind paid tiers. Reporting also gets noticeably more limited on the free plan; you can see pipeline totals, but slicing the data by custom properties requires an upgrade.
“The free tier isn’t a trap — it’s a genuinely complete CRM for a very small team. The trap is scaling past what it’s designed for without realizing you’ve hit a wall.”
Marketing Hub overlap
If you’re only using the CRM piece, be aware HubSpot’s ecosystem is built to pull you toward its Marketing Hub and Sales Hub add-ons over time — the free CRM is partly a funnel for the rest of the product suite. That’s not necessarily a downside if you’ll eventually want those tools, but worth knowing upfront if you want to stay CRM-only.
Pricing, in plain terms
The core CRM is free indefinitely, with no seat limit — a genuinely rare structure among CRM providers. Paid tiers add automation, advanced reporting, and more Marketing/Sales Hub functionality, priced per seat with tiers that scale up from there. Because HubSpot adjusts its tier boundaries periodically, check their current pricing page for exact numbers before committing to a paid plan.
For a small team that just needs to track deals and stay organized without process automation, the free tier is worth using as-is for as long as it fits.
A genuinely usable free CRM for small teams — just expect to hit upgrade prompts the moment you need automation or advanced reporting.
